Pastor Garry W. Squire has served as pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church since 1988. His has been the longest tenure in Messiah’s long history. Prior to coming to Messiah he served as pastor of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, Richmond Hill, New York.
Pastor Squire is a graduate of William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, were he studied Music Education with a concentration in tuba performance. He is also a graduate of Christ Seminary-Seminex, Saint Louis, were he earned his Master of Divinity. In June of 1983, he was ordained in his home church of Grace Lutheran Church, Teaneck, New Jersey.
Pastor Squire is currently serving the wider church as Dean of the Staten Island Conference of the Metropolitan New York Synod. He has also been a Coverage Pastor for several of the neighboring Lutheran congregations.
He has been a member of the Metropolitan New York Synod Council, Board of Directors of the Eger Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and Board of Directors of Martin Lutheran High School.
Pastor Squire has 3 daughters who have all been raised here at Messiah. In his free time he enjoys playing the tuba. He has played with the Staten Island South Shore Band and also in “Tuba Christmas” held annually in Rockefeller Center. He currently plays with the Staten Island Community Band, serving as its President.
